PCA Club Racing
The Southern Arizona Region of the Porsche Club of America is proud to have been closely
involved with the inaugural Arizona Club Race held at Firebird International Raceway, near
Chandler, AZ, in 2001. Members of SAR helped with the planning beforehand and with a wide
variety of worker tasks during the event. This happens to have been PCA Nationals' very first
night race! We had a great time working with the Arizona Region of PCA (we co-sponsored the
event) and they have gone on to later incarnations of that first race. We are very happy to
report that there were no serious incidents and, that we had a very, very happy group of
drivers that weekend. Arizona Club Racing doesn't occur all that often because of our
somewhat isolated location. However, members of our region have participated, both in the
roles of driver and worker, over the years. Club racing is somewhere between full-fledged
professional racing and the driver education, autocross and car control clinics that we
encourage our member to try. There are lots of resources for club racing and most can be
found at the PCA National site at http://pca.org/clubrace/.
An article about the technical side of the Club Race

Here are a few photos from the 2001 event.
Here we see the pre-grid area for one of the afternoon practice sessions. Lots of nicely
painted cars and they sounded even better! Photo Credit- Rink Reinking
A pair of Porches exit the tower turn at FIR and start down the long main straight. Look
carefully and you will see a pack of four cars negotiating the early part of this corner.
The pace car is in pit lane, ready to assist if needed.

Before each race we found that even the staging area was exciting. Somehow, the darkness
added to the beauty and of course the cool air carried the sounds that we love to hear. Photo Credit- Rink Reinking
