Recommended Reading
for Driver Education and Autocross events

We have a few books for you to consider because we have used them, and found them useful, in our own driving experiences. These books may be found at your local bookseller, where you can actually pick up the book and read a few pages. Or, you can use on-line resources such as Amazon.com or Google.com, for example, and in some cases see a few pages as well. There are two primary books we suggest, Speed Secrets Professional Race Driving Techniques and Going Faster! Mastering the Art of Race Driving.

Speed Secrets 1
Professional Race Driving Techniques

by Ross Bentley

The Speed Secrets Professional Race Driving Techniques book we suggest is the first of a long series of specialized Speed Secrets books and we list those below. The first book is possibly the very best book for novice and intermediate drivers. The format is logical and the chapter sizes are quite manageable. There is enough repetition to reinforce concepts without wasting space. The order of presentation is good for first time readers and it also allows quick review session reading for later. Re-reading sections of this book before each event can help you focus on a few items that you may need to work on, without overwhelming you with material that you've already assimilated and already use in your driving.

Faster! Mastering the Art of Race Driving

by Carl Lopez and Danny Sullivan

The second book that we recommend is Going Faster! Mastering the Art of Race Driving. This book is perhaps best suited for the more technically-minded driver, although it can be use by any driver to expand their horizons. This book uses lots of diagrams, measurements, photos and graphs to help you learn driving skills. A great book for the driver who has participated in a number of events and wants some new challenges to work on to improve driving performance. This book is filled with quotes from professional race drivers and those comments reinforce the material in the text well.

The following books in the Speed Secrets series may help a driver focus on additional topics and should probably be saved until some progress has been made using the two primary books we suggest. The titles of the other books in the Bently series give some hint of their usefulness, but try to pick one up and thumb through it before you buy. Make sure you are ready for that next step. One additional book is included, Bob Bondurant on High Performance Driving.
